Skills Training Programmes

Brain injury, whether mild, moderate or severe, causes significant changes to everyday life. Brain Injury training programmes focus on your ability to compensate for changes following injury as well as on your educational and vocational goals.

Rehabilitative Training Services

Here at Headway, we work closely with you on  your social, personal and vocational skills so that you can live as independently as possible. Our programme modules help you to gain insight into the effects of your particular injury and develop ways to deal with them.

We encourage trainees to take part in a variety of modules during their training, based on their needs, ability and availability. Modules can include

  • Cognitive Rehabilitation
  • Activities of Daily Living

  • Communications
  • Computers

  • Horticulture/ Woodwork
  • Arts and Craft

Social and recreational opportunities are also available as part of the programme, including concerts, visits to the cinema, and use of some local sports facilities.

Participant Profile

Participants must be aged 18 to 65 with an acquired brain injury. We expect that participants would have the ability to:

  • follow basic instructions
  • work independently at a task for a short period of time
  • demonstrate a willingness to participate in the training programme

Training Ethos

The rehabilitation training programme centres on the needs of the individual trainee. Each trainee has a keyworker assigned to them whose purpose is to develop an individual learning plan in consultation with the trainee and act as a family contact point. The key worker will also liaise with any external agencies in researching further educational or vocational opportunities.

Other Information

  • We encourage you to travel independently to and from the rehabilitation training service. If independent travel is not possible initially, staff will explore all available options open to you.
  • Participation is voluntary, however we expect good attendance
  • Applicants to the programme should not be currently abusing alcohol, using un-prescribed drugs, or exhibiting seriously aggressive or inappropriate behaviour.
